Dyson DC16 Reviews and Ratings
With Dyson’s expertise in the upright category, they have added another unique tool to their vacuuming arsenal in the form of the handheld Dyson DC16 Root 6. Like many of Dyson’s other vacuums the DC16 Root 6 comes in two flavors, the DC16, which would be equivalent to one of Dyson’s many All Floors vacuums and the Dyson DC16 Animal. Oddly enough the Animal doesn’t wear its well known splash of purple color. Instead it appears to have been adorned with what looks like a pale mustard color, making delineating between the two somewhat difficult when based on looks alone.
The Dyson DC16 Root 6 packs the same Root Cyclone technology that is found on its canister counterparts, just in a smaller package. The suction strength of this vacuum is much less than that of its upright siblings, but that is to be expected given the fact that this machine is much smaller and is designed to serve a different purpose than any upright vacuum. Just don’t let its small size fool you. The DC16 handheld provides twice the suction power of their competitor’s handheld vacuums and this power allows you to pick up stuff you probably never thought you could with a handheld vacuum, helping reduce pollutants that agitate asthma and allergies. Small stones and other items that most other handhelds can’t even suck up are no trouble for the Dyson DC16 Root 6.
This vacuum also comes complete with a more compact version of its hygienic, easy to empty clear bin that can be found on the DC16 Root 6’s much larger siblings. Just a quick flick of a switch and the trap door opens up, disposing of all its contents in one easy motion.
A unique feature to this handheld is that it charges 3 times faster than its competitor’s handhelds can. This allows the machine to be re-charged, and ready to go in a matter of hours, instead of the 6+ hours that you can expect from the DC16 Root 6’s competitors. Along with this rapid charging speed, the vacuum also contains a LED warning system that can notify you when your battery power is getting low. No need to guess how much battery life is left, the DC16 Root 6 will tell you.
The DC16 Root 6 also comes with the same accessories that can be found on its much larger siblings. It comes with the same Combo Tool that can also be found on the Dyson DC25 and the Dyson DC24. Although somewhat smaller than the tool attached to its siblings, this combo tool functions in the same way and can convert from nozzle to dusting brush in no time. This vacuum also comes with the standard crevice tool that makes the vacuum perfect for a quick cleanup between the couch cushions or other hard to reach areas. Both tools include utilize a high velocity airflow, which helps give curtains and upholstery a deep down clean without having to play a type of vacuum tug of war. Those who have tried to use a competitors vacuum on their curtains will know exactly the type of tug of war we are referring to. It’s never fun when the only way you can dislodge your curtains is by turning the vacuum off.
The Dyson DC16 Root 6 was ergonomically designed with the user in mind. Weighing just over 3 pounds, the vacuum is quite balanced while putting the cleaning power you expect from Dyson in the palm of your hands. Activating the DC16 Root 6’s suction power is quite simple as well. This cordless Dyson vacuum was designed with a trigger power switch, similar to what you would expect to find on a power drill. As opposed to the competitor’s vacuums that require you to depress a button with your thumb in order to get the machine to work, a trigger switch is easier and simpler to use, cutting down on user fatigue.
Like the rest of the Dyson line, there are some delineating factors that make the Animal different than the standard model. In the case of the DC16 Root 6 Animal, it comes with a powered brush head which is geared towards helping pet owners remove the last of the pesky cat fur off the couch before their guests arrive.
While the DC16 Root 6 is Dyson’s first vacuum to enter the handheld market, it’s not without its flaws. Although 3 pounds doesn’t really sound like much, it can become quite bulky to use, especially after you have added a canister full of dirt or excess kitty litter to the total weight of the machine. With competitor’s machines weighing somewhat less than the Dyson DC16 Root 6, weight can become a factor, especially when its full weight is in the palm of your hand.
A major flaw to this cordless Dyson vacuum is its battery life. Dyson claims it can last up to 6 minutes, which is meager when compared to other handhelds on the market. While it is true that the DC16 Root 6 can re-charge 3 times faster than other models, with such a short battery life it seems as if the DC16 Root 6 will end up spending more time in the charger instead of time helping you remove the last fiber of kitty fur from your couch or automobile.
Price is also a major factor when it comes to the DC16 Root 6 or the DC16 Animal. While the saying that you get what you pay for does hold true with Dyson’s line of vacuums, its high price may be easier to stomach if the powerful suction power of this vacuum would last more than 6 minutes. Since a cordless vacuum is only as good as it battery life, the Dyson DC16 Root 6 is quite expensive given the short amount of time its suction power is available.
In conclusion, the DC16 Root 6 provides Dyson’s strong suction into a much smaller package but at a cost of battery life. While this vacuum can perform the same deep down clean as its much larger siblings, all that power is rendered nearly useless because the vacuums battery can’t support it for longer than 6 minutes at a time. So if you are looking to add a high suction powered handheld to your cleaning arsenal for quick cleanups, and are not fazed by the short battery life, then the Dyson DC16 Root 6 may be the one for you.
